PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – President Chandrikapersad Santokhi is due to return from Guyana later on Sunday after holding talks with his counterpart, Irfaan Ali, regarding the construction of the bridge over the Corentijn River linking the two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries.

“Based on the decisions made this weekend, a follow-up process will be initiated consisting of negotiations with specific companies and negotiations regarding the management, management, and financing of the bridge,” Santokhi said.

The bridge is expected to be completed in 2026.

The bridge over the Corentijn River is regarded as “a long-cherished dream” of both countries and is intended to promote trade and integration between Suriname and Guyana. Santokhi said the bridge also fits within the regional integration of Brazil, Suriname, and Guyana.

A joint statement issued following the meeting of the Ministerial Committee of Suriname and Guyana last week noted that a number of specific recommendations regarding construction, financing, and management emanating from this Ministerial meeting set out a clear time-bound framework to take this initiative to the next level.

“Following these decisions, it is anticipated that construction could commence before the end of 2024. These recommendations will be submitted to the Presidents of Suriname and Guyana for further consideration and decision at their anticipated meeting”.
