GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana Defense Force (GDF) says two Venezuelan nationals were arrested on Friday in a joint operation with the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU).

In a statement on Saturday, CANU said the Venezuelans were in a go-fast boat with more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine and a large quantity of fuel.

They were found near the coastal village of Vergenoegen, in East Bank Essequibo.

According to the Director of CANU, James Singh, one of the Venezuelans is believed to hold Guyanese citizenship.

He said the vessel had two outboard motors of 250 horsepower (HP) each.

“This is another example of inter-agency cooperation, as well as officers from that unit who were trained by overseas counterparts in the region. A number of the officers are a team that works in the region and received training through an EU (European Union)-sponsored program,” said Singh in an interview with Demerara Waves Online News.
