PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC—Gloria Stirling, President of the Constitutional Court (CHof), says the local court will be admitted to the World Conference on Constitutional Justice (WCCJ) in October.

The WCCJ brings together 120 Constitutional Courts, Councils, and Supreme Courts in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, Oceania, and Europe. Stirling said she has received written notification that the official admission by the General Members’ Meeting will take place in Madrid, Spain, in October.

The main objective of the WCCJ is to promote legal dialogue and cooperation between Constitutional Courts. Constitutional justice is promoted, with the assessment and protection of human rights being an essential element for democracy and the rule of law.

The WCCJ consists of three bodies: the General Assembly, which meets every three years; The Bureau; and the Secretariat, also called The Venice Commission. The Secretariat has approved the application for admission and will make a recommendation at the general meeting.

The benefits for Suriname are mainly international recognition, international cooperation, information exchange with international experts in the field of Constitutional Law, and protection of the rule of law regarding the constitution.
