NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC—The state-owned Bahamasair, which suspended flights to Haiti last month amid civil unrest in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country, says it will resume flights to Cap Haitian on April 20.
“We have conducted thorough assessments regarding Cap Haitian and have determined it to be a secure destination for the airline to restart scheduled flights, as with other carriers,” Bahamasair said.
“We express our appreciation to our passengers for their steadfast support throughout the temporary flight suspension,” it added, noting that the flights will happen twice per week on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Haiti has been plunged into unrest as criminal gangs seek to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henry, who has already indicated he would step down once the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) decides on a replacement.
Last Frida, the CPT members announced the finalization of the political agreement between all stakeholders involved in the establishment of the Council.
“This agreement, which has been harmonized with the decree document on the organization and operation of the CPT, will be immediately signed by the stakeholders, and then the two documents will be officially transmitted to the Government via CARICOM, the body facilitating the dialogue process,” the release stated.
Last month, armed gangs stormed the central prisons in Port-au-Prince, freeing several prisoners. Their actions, which included burning down police stations and gun battles near the airport, led to airlines canceling flights to the country.
