BROOKLYN, NY –Police Monday confirmed that the pastor of the controversial Pathways International Kingdom Restoration Ministries, Kevin Smith, has died following a vehicular accident.
Smith was traveling in an unmarked police vehicle along the Bog Walk bypass in St Catherine, southeast of there, when the accident occurred, resulting in the death of one policeman and injury to two others.
“What we know is that the two suspects involved in the double murder investigation in St James were being taken to Kingston in two vehicles and being escorted by police officers. One vehicle was the pilot, and the other vehicle was behind. The vehicle that was behind, based on the account given by the pilot vehicle, there was a crashing sound, and they realized that the vehicle overturned,” Head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Stephanie Lindsay told the Jamaica Observer newspaper.
“We are not sure exactly what transpired, and what we know is that from the vehicle that was overturned, there were four people that were seriously injured, and two of them succumbed to their injuries,” she added.
Smith was detained earlier this month after police went to his church, where human sacrifices were reportedly held. It is reported that at least one person’s throat was slashed with a knife at the church. A shoot-out reportedly occurred between police and some churchgoers, and at least three people were killed.
Police sources had indicated that Smith would have been charged with the murder of two congregants and would also have faced charges related to firearm possession.
Smith was interviewed by police detectives in the presence of his attorney on Saturday. But media reports said that he declined to answer questions posed by the detectives from the Major Investigation Division.
