KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) says it will be serving the National Water Commission (NWC) with an enforcement notice on Wednesday after confirming that a “small fish kill” in a section of the Rio Cobre in St Catherine, southeast of here on Sunday had now been contained.

In a statement, the NEPA said it had determined during its investigation of the incident that approximately 50 fish were seen floating on the river on Christmas morning and that it was due to pollution from a malfunctioning NWC sewage treatment plant.

It said that the defective plant caused untreated sewage to be emitted into the Old John’s Gully, which flows into the river, and that the NWC has since corrected the problem.

“Arising from this incident, NEPA said it will be serving the NWC with an enforcement notice on December 27 to outline specific terms to which the entity must comply,” the NEPA added.
