ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Two weeks after resigning as a member of the opposition New National Party (NNP), Delma Thomas Sunday night confirmed that she would be working with the government of Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, that came to office in the general election in June last year.

Thomas, addressing a meeting of her St Andrew’s North West constituency attended by Prime Minister Mitchell, said that the opposition legislator had lengthy discussions with the head of government since announcing her departure from the NNP.

“With everything happening, the Prime Minister invited me for a meeting. However, this meeting had nothing about what’s happening to you and the NNP. He wasn’t concerned about,” she said, adding that Mitchell, an attorney, “did not mix words to say maybe you should stay and see what’s happening..he said I believe you should come in the government, and that’s where you could make contributions for your people”.

Thomas, who in her letter of resignation from the NNP had complained that “my continuation as a member of the party had become untenable following my many attempts to promote the democratization of the organization,” told the meeting on Sunday night the decision to work with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was not taken lightly and swiftly.

“I had to discuss with the people because the first thing I had told them was I was going independent…and I stand here today, and I say to the Prime Minister I said yes, to work for the people of Grenada…I am committed to the people of St. Andrew North West.

“Mr. Prime Minister, I say yes to working with you and your team. I say yes to Grenada. I say yes to women’s power…and so I have pledged my commitment to work with the NDC government as we move forward …we have to transform this nation”.

Prime Minister Mitchell told the meeting that he was pleased that Thomas, who had served as a government minister in the last NNP administration, had agreed to work with his administration.

“We are here collectively to move Grenada forward,” he said, describing Thomas as a “genuine and straightforward person.

“These are the persons we need in public life,” he said.

Mitchell called on the members of her constituency to work with both Thomas and the party’s prospective candidate, Gloria Thomas, to improve the constituency.

“The time has come for us not to waste our time destroying one another, pulling down one another, spreading rumors about one another…I called on the constituency to pledge their support to continue working with the government and these two powerful women,” he said.

The NNP, under the leadership of former prime minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, had won all 15 seats in the 2013 and 2018 general elections but lost power in June last year when it was defeated by the NDC by a 9-6 margin.
