A cross-section of Representatives from a number of Guyanese Organizations met last week Friday afternoon to examine the prospects of launching an effective Umbrella- Outfit.
The meeting was held at the Hill’s Lounge on Church avenue.
Convenor of the meeting was Attorney- at-Law, Colin Moore. At the commencement of the meeting, Mr. Moore informed the gathering about the principal reasons the he felt had warranted the need to organize and launch such a Body.
Mr. Moore pointed out that with scores of Guyanese-based Groups operating in the Boroughs of New York City, there was definite urgency to establish greater coordination and more effective communications among those entities, in order to reduce occurrences of unnecessary competition and duplication.
Most of the representatives present at the meeting, agreed with the Convener’s sentiments, and proposed that going forward, increased efforts should be made to hold cooperative ventures such as fund-raisers and educational fora.
It was also suggested that since most of the Guyanese organizations had already planned their individual programs for this year, the Umbrella-Group should concentrate on mobilizing support for those activities; while seeking to promote jointly-sponsored and cooperative events from next year.
Another important item that was discussed at Friday’s meeting was ways and means of administering the Umbrella-Organization via membership-recruitment, the establishment of a qualitative secretariat, and funding-arteries.
The (proposed)Umbrella-Organization in association with a number of Brooklyn Politicians and Religious Institutions, is holding a symposium on President Trump’s Immigration plans.
The symposium is going to be held on Saturday at the St.Stephens church on east 29th street.
Prior to the conclusion of the meeting, College-Professor, Dr.Lear Matthews shared insights around research work that he was doing into Guyanese-based organizations that were operating in Boroughs of New York City.
