On a significant note, former premier Sir John Swan has announced his decision to contest the May 22 by-election for the Smith’s North constituency as an independent candidate, potentially reshaping Bermuda’s political landscape.

“In a thought-provoking critique of the Westminster system, Sir John Swan highlighted the contrast between loyalty to the party and loyalty to the public. He urged Bermuda to reconsider a system that, in his view, is not functioning effectively,” he stated at a news conference.

Earlier this month, Sir John, the former leader of the United Bermuda Party (UBP) and the longest-serving head of government in the British Overseas Territory, had said he would contest the by-election if the voters of Smith’s North indicated that they were prepared to support his bid.

“I believe the Westminster system that we inherited is not working,” he told reporters, adding,” We’ve got to a stage now where party loyalty is the number one thing, and whatever the party decides or the leader of the party decides, people get behind and blindly follow the leader.

“I had to stop and think. We needed independent members who had achieved something personally and contributed to the political system.

“I will submit my name as a candidate for Smith’s North. The reason is straightforward: If I get elected, it indicates that people want change and are prepared to embrace change.”

The by-election was called after former premier Michael Dunkley, a former leader of the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA), announced his retirement.

The ruling Progressive Labour Party (PLP) has named Lindsay Simmons, while the OBA’s candidate is Robert King.
