VANCOUVER, British Columbia, CMC – Trinidadian Kerron Khelawan and Jamaican Kuri Powell collected wins on Monday’s seven-race card at the Hastings Racecourse in Canada.

It was the second win for Khelawan in 15 rides in the new season, which opened on April 30, and the first for Powell in eight rides.

Powell got on the tins first when he piloted the 8-1 outsider Jerseys Image to a 1 1/4 lengths win in the CAN $11 000 first race over 1 300 meters on the dirt.

Jerseys Image got away alertly and dueled for the lead through the first turn and down the backside from outside She’s On Fire under Trinidadian jockey Brian Boodramsingh.

Powell continued to battle on Jerseys Image with She’s On Fire into the final turn before he got the four-year-old chestnut gelding to take command, entering the lane and inch clear in the drive to finish in one minute, 18.59 seconds.

Khelawan scored with the 2-1 choice Jose Jose in the CAN $20 000 fifth race, also over 1 300 meters on the dirt.

Jose Jose also got away alertly, and Khelawan got his mount to take the lead in the run to the first turn and control the pace on the run down the backstretch before the four-year-old bay gelding opened a clear advantage approaching the final turn and widened his margin to clock 1 min, 17.49 secs.
