HAITI-Alarming food situation for 8.2 million Haitians – says World Food Programme

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – The World Food Programme says that approximately 8.2 million people in this French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) were estimated to have insufficient food consumption in Haiti in November 2023, and although the situation has slightly improved compared to the previous month, it remains alarmingly high.

The WFP says that while most essential food commodities are globally available throughout the country, the closure of the border with the Dominican Republic has had some tangible impacts on specific commodities, specifically in border departments such as the Northeast.

Based on an analysis of the affordability of the minimum expenditure basket (MEB), it is estimated that between 30 and 35% of Haitians will be unable to afford to buy essential needs in the next two months if prices continue to rise.

The WFP added that the season has been chiefly drier than average in Haiti, and conditions have worsened from August to October, with severely dry conditions in the southern peninsula.

It was also noted that in November, a tropical depression brought abnormally substantial amounts of rainfall. Still, given the timing and the intensity, such conditions are unlikely to improve perspectives of a drop in agricultural production.
