LONDON, CMC – Bermuda captain Delray Rawlins produced another fluent cameo as he helped Sussex beat Hampshire by four wickets in the Second XI Championship here Wednesday.

Set 204 for victory on a penultimate day at Hove. The hosts were in trouble at 56 for three before being bailed out by Rawlins’s attacking instincts, the left-hander blasting 42 off 32 deliveries in a critical 87-run fourth wicket stand with 19-year-old James Coles, who made an equally pulsating 62.

The left-handed Rawlins, who top-scored with a counter-attacking 68 in the first innings on Tuesday, smashed half-dozen fours and a six, while Coles belted eight fours and six off 46 deliveries.

Rawlins eventually perished when he missed a booming drive at leg-spinner Mason Crane (3-47) and was bowled.

His wicket was one of three to fall for 22 runs to leave Sussex tottering on 165 for six, the right-handed Coles one of the casualties, bowled around his legs by Crane attempting a reverse sweep.

Eighteen-year-old Archie Lenham (25 not out) and Aristides Karvelas (15 not off) combined in a 39-run, unbroken seventh wicket stand, however, to see Sussex over the line.

Hampshire was dismissed for 231 after resuming the morning on 203 for seven.

At the County Ground in Beckenham, Barbadian batsman Nico Reifer made only 16 as Surrey Second XI declared on 309 for seven in their first innings in reply to Kent’s 401 for six declared overnight.

Josh Blake (80), Gus Atkinson (58), and 19-year-old Timothy Lloyd (50) all struck half-centuries to underpin Surrey’s reply.

They were eight for one in the third before Reifer joined 21-year-old captain Ben Geddes (48) to stabilize the innings in a 54-run, second-wicket stand.

In their second turn at the crease, Kent were 160 for two, with opener Harry Finch unbeaten on 75, having put on 65 for the first wicket with Marcus O’Riordan (39) and 87 for the third wicket with Alex Blake (37 not out).
