SANTIAGO, Chile. Ministers and senior authorities on housing and urban planning in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Monday began a two-day meeting analyzing the challenges facing the region in terms of housing and urban development.
The XXXI General Assembly of the Forum of Ministers and Highest Authorities of Housing and Urbanism of Latin America and the Caribbean will also seek to promote an exchange in order to generate a common perspective on the problems, size the challenges, and jointly visualize solutions and share good practices, with a view to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda.
According to the organizers, the authorities will analyze matters of common interest, such as the role of the State in the coordination and planning of urban-housing policies with a gender perspective and climate change criteria, as well as the land market and financing, among others.
“In the most urbanized developing region in the world, these issues are crucial for the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to transform housing and the city into instruments of social cohesion, economic growth, and the fight against climate change.”
The organizers said that during Tuesday’s closed-door meeting, a new Minurvi board of directors would be elected a statement outlining the issues addressed during the XXXI Assembly would be released.
“The Minerva Forum is the space for intergovernmental coordination and cooperation of the countries of the region in the area of sustainable development of human settlements.
“It is made up of the Ministers of State and the government authorities under whose competence, in the respective countries, are found matters related to housing and the sustainable development of human settlements,” the organizers said, noting that it was created in 1992.
Since December 2020, ECLAC and UN-Habitat jointly exercise the Technical Secretariat of the Minurvi Forum.
