LONDON– Reggae Boyz target Chey Dunkley scored a late winner as Shrewsbury Town came from behind to beat Carlisle United 3-2 in England’s League Cup first round.

It looked like Tuesday’s tie would head to penalties after Kristian Dennis scored another late equalizer for the League Two side.

But League One Shrews defender Dunkley, 30, who received an invite to play for Jamaica in last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, took full advantage of a Matthew Pennington free-kick, which found him in space on 86 minutes to secure the home side’s place in the next round.

Elsewhere in the cup, Brandon Thomas-Asante, a 23-year-old forward eligible to play for Jamaica, gave fourth-tier Salford City a 23rd-minute lead against League One opponents Bolton Wanderers. Still, the home side roared back to win 5-1.

Jordan Bowery, whose former footballing dad Bert came from St Kitts and Nevis, saw red as League Two Mansfield Town went down 2-1 to Derby County after pushing the League One visitors in a first-round thriller.

Bowery was sent off with 10 minutes left for bringing down James Collins, who had gone clear.

Bermuda captain Nahki Wells, given a rare start by Bristol City, held the ball up well and provided two first-half assists as Nigel Pearson’s outfit defeated Championship rivals Coventry City 4-1.

The game was moved to Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium around 30 miles away on Wednesday night because of problems with Coventry’s pitch.

After Wells headed the ball across the goal to set up Kal Naismith’s opener on 12 minutes, the Bermudian helped make it 3-0 before half-time as he stole the ball deep in Coventry territory before feeding 20-year-old forward Tommy Conway for his second of the night.
