BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – Belize has signed an agreement with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) that will allow the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country to have access funding from a BZ$26 million (One Belize dollar=US$0.49 cents) project grant.

Prime Minister John Briceño and CABEI president Ana Guisella Sánchez Maroto signed the agreement.

A government statement said that the project, known as the “Use of Nature-Based Solutions to Increase Resilience to Extreme Climate Events in the Atlantic Region of Central America,” is available to three beneficiary countries: Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.

It said approximately BZ$10 million will be available to Belize to recover communities that have suffered damages from extreme weather events, such as the restoration of mangroves in Monkey River Village.

The statement added that the Climate Finance Unit will implement the project within the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management.
