ST. MAARTEN-Voting underway. St. Martin’s Parliamentary election

PHILIPSBURG, St Maarten, CMC – The citizens of this Dutch Caribbean island headed to the polls on Thursday morning in Parliamentary elections. The polls opened at 8 am (local time) at 20 polling stations for the 22,553 registered voters.

Police officers from the other Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), arrived on the island to assist with maintaining peace and security.

Eight political parties have offered up 129 candidates for the 15 parliamentary seats.

The political parties contesting are the National Alliance, United Sint Maarten Party, National Opportunity Wealth, Empire Culture Empowerment Association, United People Party, Party for Progress, Unified Resilient Sint Maarten Movement, and Democratic Party.

In 2020, a coalition government was formed following the results of that election, with Silveria Jacobs at the helm as the Prime Minister.

The election results are expected to be in by midnight local time.
