BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Josue Pierre, candidate for City Council in the 40th District, has issued the following statement urging state and city leaders to prevent devastating budget cuts by raising tax revenue from the wealthiest New Yorkers.

“How long are leaders in Albany and City Hall going to pretend that there’s some way to address this crisis without requiring billionaires and ultra millionaires to pay their fair share? The basic functions of government such as education, housing, healthcare, sanitation, and social services are in crisis NOW. After decades of tax breaks and giveaways to the wealthy, we can no longer afford to keep burdening working people. Our budget has collapsed, Trump is blocking any help from Washington, and we need to raise $10 billion to prevent the worst cuts. While thousands of working New Yorkers struggle to pay rent and afford healthcare, the wealthy few profited off the pandemic to exponentially increase their fortunes. Just as we asked our essential workers to make sacrifices to keep our City and State going, we must now ask the wealthy to dig a little deeper to help maintain our most basic quality of life. Enough is enough. It’s time to tax the rich.”
