BROOKLYN, NY – The Police Service Commission (PSC) in Trinidad and Tobago Tuesday said the Police Commissioner Gary Griffith had not resigned his post as the Barbados-based Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) denied any knowledge of a news story originating out of Port of Spain, indicating that he had done so.

The PSC in a brief statement said that it “wishes to advise the public that the information circulating on social media concerning the resignation of Mr. Gary Griffith as Commissioner of Police is false,” and that the public is urged to refrain from sharing this misinformation.

Earlier, CMC had issued a statement in which it said the story is “false” and at no time did any of its employees or correspondents speak to the Police Commissioner on the issue of resignation or any other matter in Trinidad and Tobago at any time.

CMC said it is unfortunate that a reputable agency is being used to spread “fake” news in Trinidad and Tobago and by extension the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

“We confirm that we have had no association with the comments attributed to Mr. Griffith in this particular report and therefore we are asking people to desist from using the CMC to publish “fake” news and hereby tarnish our reputation as an independent, credible news source,” said Lori Weatherhead, the Team Leader at the Barbados based agency

In a statement, Griffith later warned criminal elements that such “fake” news would not deter him from his duties.

Griffith said he had “bad news” for the criminal elements and those who are members of the “Hate Gary Club”.

Griffith said that there were too many idle hands in the country, who have nothing better to do than to spread fake news.

Griffith said that those who know him would know he is a “fighter and not a quitter” and that he and the Chair of the National Security Council, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley “have too many things to do to secure this country, that he cannot even contemplate resigning”.

Griffith said there are people out there “with an agenda with one purpose in mind and that is to spread false news with the hope of having a destabilizing effect”.
