ROSEAU, Dominica, Police are investigating the death of a medical practitioner whose body was found in a pool of blood at her home in Goodwill, on the outskirts of the capital on Friday.

Police believe that the death of Dr. Velma Valmond, the island’s 17th murder this year, resulted from domestic violence.

Police Inspector, Fixton Henderson, told reporters that law enforcement officials had responded “ to a report of domestic violence between a woman and her boyfriend” and, on arrival at the residence, found the lifeless body of the 35-year-old woman “in a pool of blood with a severe laceration across her neck.”

Henderson said the victim was examined and pronounced dead by a medical doctor, and her body was transported to a funeral home awaiting an autopsy.

“Velma’s boyfriend, Alexander, 32 years old ….was also met on the floor ….and in a state of distress,” Henderson added, “he was transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Dominica China Friendship Hospital and is in a stable condition.”

The police said that Dr. Valmond’s 18-year-old daughter is also nursing injuries sustained during the incident and is also in stable condition at the hospital.
