TRINIDAD-CARICOM foreign ministers to meet in Trinidad

TRINIDADPORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Foreign affairs ministers from several Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries will meet here from Wednesday for two meetings of the Economic Commissioner for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

Suriname Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation Minister Albert Ramdin will chair the ECLAC’s development seminar on Wednesday.

ECLAC said that as the countries of the subregion pursue resilient recovery post-COVID-19 in an increasingly challenging global environment, the two-day meeting provides “ a timely opportunity for dialogue and exchange on practical strategies to revitalize the economies of the Caribbean and to enhance the capacities of governments to support durable development.

“Consideration will be given to the modern skills needed in the workforce to facilitate economic diversification and enhance productivity; how best to harness the power of data, innovation, and digitalization for more effective participation in the emerging knowledge economy; and how to strengthen institutional infrastructure for creative problem-solving,” it added.

Ramdin will also chair the 21st Monitoring Committee (MonCom) meeting of the Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee (CDCC) on Friday.

The CDCC is an ECLAC body created to promote development cooperation among Caribbean countries. The objectives include promoting and strengthening economic and social cooperation and integration among the countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. As well as to encourage the sharing of information and experiences among its membership.

It is also intended to promote common positions and strategies on economic and social issues among Caribbean nations and on their relations with third countries and to present those positions to international forums and agencies.

“Regular sessions of ministers are held every two years,” ECLAc said, adding that preceding the Monitoring Committee meeting on Wednesday and Thursday with the highlight being a panel discussion and a presentation from Pennelope Beckles, the Minister of Planning and Development of Trinidad and Tobago.-CARICOM foreign ministers to meet in Trinidad.
