PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – An Indian packaging company Bajaj Processpack is studying the possibility of expanding its business activities to Suriname, with or without local partners.
According to the company’s general manager, Girish Bajaj, who is currently on an orientation visit here with a delegation from his company, there is excellent potential in Suriname to generate income from the processing, packaging, and export of fruit and other agricultural product.
During President Chandrikapersad Santokhi’s working visit to India in January, the management of Bajaj Processpack expressed an interest in doing business with and in Suriname. A few months later, in a presentation to representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, the business community, and the agricultural sector, Bajaj discussed the possibilities of his company.
He also pointed to the processes within his company and the benefits and income that Suriname could generate in this industry, such as the processing and packaging of fruit and other agricultural products.
Bajaj emphasized that Suriname no longer needs to import certain products but can process, package, and export itself.
He added that the machines are manufactured so that waste can be minimized. The company is guided by technologies such as biomass and solar energy and noted that with its carbon-negative status, Suriname could benefit from this.
Agriculture Minister Parmanand Sewdien stated that contact with Bajaj Processpack has been going on for a long time. According to Sewdien, Bajaj Processpack is a multi-billion dollar company with a lot of technical expertise based on the conditions in developing countries.
Bajaj Processpack has played an essential role in taking the industrialization of the agricultural sector to the next level.
The company is working on this in Africa and expanding its interest to the Caribbean and Suriname.
