KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) Wednesday urgently called on the police “to exert every effort to investigate” the threats made against media workers, as it strongly denounced the “pervasive threats and abuse” directed at Television Jamaica (TVJ) journalist, Giovanni Dennis.

The threats followed the journalist’s special report on Sunday night highlighting illegal drag racing in Jamaica, and the PAJ said that the threats were an attack on press freedom in the country.

TVJ also publicized the threats in its Prime Time News on Monday night.

“Journalists/reporters must be allowed to do their work free from fear and intimidation from whatever source,” the PAJ said, adding that the matter has been reported to the police and the Cyber Crimes Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

“We reiterate our call to the police to use all available resources to investigate these threats and bring the perpetrators to justice,” said the PAJ statement, signed by its president, Milton Walker.

The PAJ said it urges journalists to be firm and resolute in their pursuit of stories and not to be intimidated by anyone.
