KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Former prime minister Portia Simpson-Miller has been admitted to a hospital for “non-emergency care, ” the central opposition People’s National Party (PNP) confirmed on Friday.
The party gave no details regarding Simposon-Miller’s health in a brief statement. Still, it said that the 77-year-old former government and party leader “ is doing well and is being supported by a capable medical team and her loved ones.
“On behalf of her family, the PNP expresses sincere gratitude for your prayers and well wishes as we pray for good health and a speedy recovery for our dear Sister P,” it added.
Simpson-Miller, elected to Parliament in 1976, became the country’s first female prime minister from March 2006 to September 2007 and again from 5 January 2012 to 3 March 2016.
She served as PNP leader from 2005 to 2017 and the Leader of the Opposition twice, from 2007 to 2012 and 2016 to 2017.
