LONDON, CMC – Grenada international Omar Beckles scored a late own goal, and Shaq Forde, the son of former Barbados international Fabian Forde, was one of two players sent off as Leyton Orient suffered a nightmare second half to slump to a 2-1 defeat to Gillingham.

Playing in their opening EFL Trophy group match on Tuesday, Orient found themselves 1-0 up at the break at Priestfield Stadium before the game changed when Forde was sent off in the 62nd minute, followed by debutant Brendan Cooper just moments later.

Gillingham pounced quickly, Cheye Alexander equalizing from the spot in the 80th minute and Beckles slotting into his nets three minutes later.

“It’s not good. Is it completely all down to us? I don’t know. We have to look at things, but I agree, we can’t be ill-disciplined,” said manager Paul Terry, who recently picked up a red card during a League One defeat at Wycombe.

“From us on the bench to the players on the pitch, we’ve got to be better, and we will be.”

Earlier, Orient had dominated the first half, resulting in them taking the lead two minutes before the break when George Moncur’s strike struck the post and then deflected from the back of goalkeeper Glen Morris into the nets.

The goal capped off a brilliant spell for the visitors, which saw Max Sanders twice forcing saves out of Morris inside the first 15 minutes and Forde also calling the custodian into action with a curling effort tipped around the post.
