MIAMI, CMC -Tropical Storm Bret is expected to strengthen further on Tuesday as it approaches the Lesser Antilles later this week and could become a “hurricane in a couple of days,” the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned.

It said interests in the Lesser Antilles should continue monitoring the storm’s progress about 1130 miles east of the southern Windward Islands.

While the NHC said there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, in its latest bulletin issued at 5,00 am (local time), the center of Tropical Storm Bret was located near latitude 11.7 North, longitude 44.7 West.

“Bret is moving toward the west near 17 miles per hour (mph), and this general motion is expected to continue for the next several days. On the forecast track, the system should be approaching the Lesser Antilles by late this week.”

The NHC said that it has sustained winds remaining near 40 mph with higher gusts and that strengthening is forecast, and Bret could become a hurricane in a couple of days.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center.
