Officials have reported that HAMILTON, Bermuda— A New Jersey man skippering a yacht in the prestigious Newport Bermuda Race died after falling overboard during rough weather on Sunday afternoon.

Organizers posted on Sunday night that the fleet communications office had reported the tragedy.

“The crew of the yacht Morgan of Marietta, a 42-foot sloop, reported that its captain, Colin Golder of New Providence, New Jersey, went overboard early this afternoon in strong winds, approximately 325 miles from Bermuda, and did not survive,” the post read.

The organizers said Golder’s body was recovered after “extended effort,” and the vessel returned to the US mainland.

“The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee, the Cruising Club of America, and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club wish to express sincere condolences to the family and crew of Mr. Golder. Further details will be provided as they become available.”

The biennial 635-mile race from Newport, Rhode Island, to Bermuda, which was first held in 1906, began on Friday with a 187-strong fleet.
