BELIZE-Taiwan provides funds for low-income housing projects.

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – Taiwan is providing a grant of US$1.4 million to help Belize launch the second phase of its low-income housing program.

A government statement the funding will be used to finance the construction of approximately 50 studio houses, which is expected to improve the living conditions of about 250 beneficiaries.

“It is envisaged that the project will be executed at the planned community development referred to as Highland Estate. This planned community development will provide 831 parcels of land to first-time landowners in Belmopan. This project is being implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing and is estimated to have a duration of 10 months,” the government said.

Infrastructure Development and Housing Minister Julius Espat, in extending the government’s appreciation for the loan, also further committed the country “to strengthening cooperation and friendly relations.”

Belize is among a handful of CARICOM countries with diplomatic relations with Taiwan that China considers a renegade province. The others are St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
