TAIPEI, Taiwan, CMC—Taiwan’s relationship with Haiti remains strong and has “established friendly and solid relations with Haiti’s transitional government” in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.

Haiti is among a handful of CARICOM countries with diplomatic relations with Taiwan, despite China’s efforts to get governments to adopt the “One China” policy and break off ties with Taipei, which it describes as a renegade province.

Belize, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and St. Kitts-Nevis are the other CARICOM countries with diplomatic relations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said that the country’s ambassador to Haiti, Ku Wen-Jiang, had established friendly interactions with Haiti’s key officials, including interim Prime Minister Garry Conille, Foreign Minister Dominique Dupuy and head of the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) Edgard Leblanc Fils.

The head of MOFA’s Latin American and Caribbean Affairs department, Cheng Li-cheng, told reporters the United States, Canada, and CARICOM coordinated to establish the TPC on April 25, whose members later elected Conille as Haiti’s interim prime minister on May 28. The country’s new Cabinet was formally inaugurated on June 12.

He said Taiwan and Haiti have enjoyed 68 years of friendship since establishing diplomatic relations in 1956.

Ku said the two countries have worked closely over the years to achieve fruitful results in agriculture, infrastructure, public health, disaster relief, environmental protection, social assistance, and education.

Ku said the Haitian government has constantly supported Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and values peace and security in the Taiwan Strait.

He said Taiwan looks forward to Haiti’s continued progress in restoring constitutional and social order and aims to strengthen cooperation with Haiti’s new administration to deepen their diplomatic ties.
