PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC -Suriname and Aruba have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen their bilateral cooperation and lay the foundation for further cooperation in areas such as trade, tourism, education, energy, security, and migration.

The agreement was signed by Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation Minister and Aruba’s Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes on Monday, as the two countries confirmed their intention to jointly explore and exploit new economic, social, and cultural opportunities.

President Chandrikapersad Chan Santokhi, on an official visit to Aruba, spoke of the historical ties between the two Dutch-speaking countries.

“Our shared history forms the basis for a joint future of friendship, brotherhood, and mutual respect. This signing confirms our joint ambition to strengthen the ties between our countries and offer our people new opportunities.”

He noted the importance of signing the document for future generations, especially regarding sustainable development, innovation, and stimulating economic growth.

Prime Minister Wever-Croes expressed her satisfaction with the step towards more intensive cooperation, saying, “With this signing, we are taking an important step to convert our historical ties into concrete opportunities.

“We will further expand cooperation in crucial areas such as trade, tourism, energy, and education, which will lead to growth and prosperity for both our countries,” she said, underscoring the importance of the involvement of both governments and technical teams that have worked hard in recent months to shape this agreement.

The state-owned Communication Service Suriname said the agreement covers many sectors, including economy and trade, corporate social responsibility, logistics, agriculture, tourism, education, culture, healthcare, and energy.

“This cooperation aims to strengthen economic ties, promote sustainable growth, and create more opportunities for entrepreneurs and young people in both countries. Sustainable energy is an important focus within the cooperation, where both countries will promote joint research initiatives and knowledge exchange.”

It said strengthening air connections via Surinam Airways will promote mutual visits and business opportunities.
