KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) launched a new initiative to capture 40 wanted people within 40 days on Wednesday.

The initiative continues the JCF’s robust social media campaign against crime. It coincides with the start of the 40-day Lenten period and is typically indicative of a time of testing, trial, penance, purification, and renewal.

The ‘40 in 40’ is reminiscent of the 2018 “What are You Giving Up for Lent‟ campaign, and the JFC said that the new initiative is a challenge to citizens to help the police capture 40 wanted persons within 40 days.

In a statement, the JCF said that the campaign, which is strategically timed, advances one element of its crime reduction strategies through the well-received promulgation of wanted persons on its much anticipated weekly Wanted Wednesdays feature on its social media platforms.

“We remain committed to the prevention and reduction of serious, violent, and organized crimes by removing that which feeds these misdeeds – guns, gangs, and gunmen. Not only are we unrelenting in our pursuit of criminals and creating safer communities, but also in having law-abiding citizens appreciate the importance of speaking out and standing up against criminality,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Stephanie Lindsay, head of the JCF’s Corporate Communications Unit.

“The component of combating crime through communication and engagement has reaped success, so we thank the public for its embrace of our work and encourage them to continue sharing information confidently and confidentially through any of the reporting platforms – 119, 811, or via Crime Stop at 311,” she added.

Jamaican authorities are pushing back on claims by the United States that the island is unsafe for tourists because of rampant crime.

In renewed travel warnings last month, the US State Department urged Americans to beware of Jamaica in a Level 3 advisory.

“Violence and shootings occur regularly in many neighborhoods, communities, and parishes in Jamaica,” the State Department said.
