KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC—Jamaicans who are eligible to vote are being urged to enumerate, emphasizing the crucial role they play in the process of transitioning from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. This is a significant moment in our nation’s history, and your participation is vital.

“Please, I implore you to enumerate to participate. The process will unfold in due course; it’s important to stay informed and engaged with what is happening,” said Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs Marlene Malahoo Forte. Your active participation is key to shaping our future.

Malahoo Forte spoke at the 10th Biennial Diaspora Conference on Thursday in Montego Bay, a western city.

The Minister said the time has come for “the Head of State of Jamaica to represent the Jamaican nationality and the Jamaican identity.”

“The other goal we are seeking to achieve is to have the highest law of the land, the Constitution of Jamaica, passed by the Parliament of Jamaica and approved by the people of Jamaica,” Malahoo Forte said.

Jamaica’s transition from constitutional monarchy to republic will involve a two-thirds majority vote in Parliament and a referendum.

In addition, the Constitutional Reform Committee (CRC) is moving to prepare drafting instructions for the substantive Bill to transition Jamaica from a constitutional monarchy to a republic.

The Minister further encouraged persons in Jamaica and the diaspora to read the report from the Constitutional Reform Committee, which was tabled in Parliament recently.

You have a Ministry, and you have the consulates, embassies, and high commissions. If you have questions… drop them, and I assure you all, the missions will ensure that we get them and that you get an answer,” Malahoo Forte said.
