GEORGETOWN, Guyana– Members of the minority opposition party, Alliance for Change (AFC), on Saturday reflected Khemraj Ramjattan as a leader with 12o votes.

The election was held during the party’s national conference on Saturday.

The only rival,  David Patterson, garnered 74.

The party also elected Cathy Hughes as chairman. She succeeded Raphael Trotman, who did not vie for a position in the party that he confounded.

According to party officials, it was also decided that the party would remain in the coalition with the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR)-led A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on the condition of getting a better deal.

According to the online publication Demerara Waves, the AFC National Conference delegates, by an “overwhelming majority,” decided to stay in the coalition but also said their party must leave if relations with APNU did not improve.

“AFC to use the time for a plan and negotiate a better arrangement. If that fails, then hen AFC will go separately,” the sources said.

Over the years, the AFC and the Working People’s Alliance have complained bitterly about how APNU has been treating its partners by sidelining them and making surprise and unilateral decisions.

The political agreement named the Cummingsburg Accord expires in December 2022.
