GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – A member of the primary opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Wednesday filed an injunction to prevent the party from staging the 22nd Biennial Delegates Conference scheduled for June 28-30.

Lawyers representing Brian Collison said their client is also seeking to stop the internal elections for the leader position and the Central Executive Committee (CEC).

He contends that Congress’s preparations violate the party’s rules and will ultimately affect Guyana’s general and regional elections.

In a statement, the VMW Law firm said Collison “wants to see reform that he hopes will strengthen his party and end division stemming from dissatisfaction with how party elections are conducted.

“As sister courts have found, the applicant contends that what the court is confronted with is party procedures and noncompliance in addition to that that dilute and debase the participation of voters in the process by which candidates that appear on election ballots will emerge,” the lawyers said in their the court documents.

The injunction is being sought to restrain incumbent PNCR Leader Aubrey Norton and the PNCR, either singularly or collectively or by their servants or agents, from holding an election of officers and CEC members until the substantive matter is heard and determined or a subsequent High Court order is made to permit the holding of the Congress.

Collison also wants the High Court to order the PNCR’s agents or servants to refrain from retaliating against him or any other party member for participating in the court action.

“This action seeks to ensure that irregularities in the process leading up to the selection of delegates for the imminent PNC Congress do not compromise the will of the members of the PNCR and the party’s support base.”

Collison wants the High Court to declare that the Congress Circular dated May 17, 2024, and all subsequent Congress Circulars.

Earlier this week, Hastings-Williams resigned immediately, citing several concerns including invitations being sent out to people to attend the upcoming party Congress without her knowledge.

Collison has also filed a third injunction restraining the respondents, either singularly or collectively, or their servants or agents, from infringing the rights of PNCR members as enshrined in that party’s constitution.

The High Court is being asked to declare that the PNCR performs functions of the State that touch upon and impact the Constitutional rights of its members and supporters.
