LACROSSE-USVI clip Jamaica 19-18 at the 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championship

UTICA, New York, CMC – The US Virgin Islands pulled off a narrow 19-18 overtime win over Jamaica to advance in the 13th place consolation bracket at the 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championship currently underway in Utica, New York.

Dante Poli influenced the game for the USVI with five goals and four assists. Phillip Melecio and Matt Williams each added hat-tricks, while Ryan Cochran finished with two goals and four assists for the Virgin Islands, which saw Patrick Crosby pulling off 28 saves in the net.

On Jamaica’s side, Tanner Sims tallied seven goals and an assist, while Damon Edwards recorded five assists with a hat-trick. Seven other Jamaican players scored goals, including two from Jemar Pottinger. Jacob Thompson made 28 saves in goal.

The USVI picked up its second win in Utica and will face Scotland in placement play. Jamaica will take on Hungary in the Men’s 15th to 28th place bracket.

In group play, the USVI finished fourth in Group E with one point, following a 19-18 win against Austria. They suffered a 16-10 loss to the Netherlands and a 15-11 loss to Italy. Jamaica finished third in Group D after securing a 12-6 win over Chinese Tapei and losing 23-4 to Czechia and 14-12 to Scotland.
