ETOBICOKE, Ontario, CMC – Established Barbadian jockey Rico Walcott edged into the top-10 jockeys this season at the Woodbine racetrack in Canada with a double on Sunday’s 11-race card.
The 36-year-old, a multiple champion at tracks in western Canada, now has 24 wins for the year at the country’s premier facility and moved into 10th in the jockeys’ standings, led by Japanese rider Kazushi Kimura, on 85 wins.
Walcott showed his riding skills when he drove the 39-1 long-shot Wealllikedhim to a one-length win in the CAN $65 900 maiden optional, claiming third race over 1 300 meters on the all-weather track.
He was content to let Weallikedhim track the speedy leader down the backside of the track and took closer order by the quarter pole before he produced the five-year-old bay gelding at the top of the lane. His mount finished determinedly between rivals for one minute, 18.64 seconds.
Walcott again had to go to work to clinch a win by a head aboard the 5-1 choice Aim for the Sky in the CAN $111 000 final race over five furlongs on the inner turf course.
He hustled Aim for the Sky to the front down the backside of the course. His mount still had the lead running on the turn before edging away in the final 200 meters from Forester’s Fortune, under ace Barbadian reinsman Patrick Husbands, and the six-year-old chestnut gelding had enough in the tank to hold for a time of 56.97 secs.
