WINNIPEG, Manitoba, CMC- Trinidadian Stanley Chadee Jr. won the feature CAN$50 250 Manitoba Matron Stakes. At the same time, Jamaican Chavion Chow captured the supporting part, the $40 000 Buffalo Stakes. Still, Barbadian Antonio Whitehall logged a brace to continue this inevitable march towards the jockey title at Assiniboia Downs.
Riding here Monday, Chadee paired with favorite Burrow Down to beat the three-year-olds and upward fillies and mares by 1-½ lengths in race seven in a time of one minute, 53:59 seconds.
Going a mile and eighth, 3-1 bet Orange Theory and 6-1 chance Missyintomischief dragged through the field through the early splits before Chadee brought the four-year-old filly Burrow Down from just off the pace to collar the leaders passing the eighth pole.
Chow’s success came in race three over a mile when he combined with bay filly Commandoslastdance to edge the two-year-olds by three-quarters of a length in a time of 1:45.54.
Commandoslastdance stalked the leaders early on before unleashing an intense stretch run to pass front-runner Banker’s Day in the final yards.
Whitehall, meanwhile, won the day’s opener aboard favorite Diamond Grand, piloting the three-year-old filly to a crushing 6-¼ length victory over the three-year-olds and upward fillies and mares.
And he returned in the day’s finale to squeak out a narrow victory by a neck aboard 4-1 chance Annakhozana, the three-year-old filly producing a late charge to beat the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares over a mile.
There was also a double for Barbadian jockey Damario Bynoe, the 33-year-old winning two over six furlongs with a 5-1 bet Highriseinthepeg and following up in race five over 5-½ furlongs with favorite Browning Island.
Whitehall leads the standings on 54 wins, 14 clear of nearest challenger Bynoe, in the season which winds up Wednesday.
