CHESTER, West Virginia, CMC – Three Caribbean horsemen combined to produce two wins on the eight-race card on Monday at the Mountaineer race track in the United States.
Globe-trotting Barbadian jockey Rocco Bowen and Trinidadian trainer Anthony Stephen delivered one of the wins. St Croix-born jockey Ajhari “A.J.” Williams had the other to keep up appearances at the track.
Bowen, whose riding has taken to no less than nine tracks across the United States and Canada this year, drove the odds-on favorite Jill Babe, trained by Stephen, to a half-length win in the U.S. $8 100 second race over six furlongs on the dirt track.
Jill Babe prompted the pace through the first half before Bowen eased up the five-year-old chestnut mare, entering the final turn before attacking in the last 100 meters to clock one minute, 12.83 seconds.
Williams claimed his 23rd win of the season with a 3-3/4 lengths win aboard the 2-1 favorite Can’t Glide by Katz in the U.S. $ 7,900 third race over 1 100 meters on the dirt.
Can’t Glide by Katz raced near the back of the field for the first quarter before the four-year-old bay gelding surged to the front on the turn, dueled with a rival in the upper stretch, and bore down to clear late and finish with a time of 1 min, 05.73 secs.
