PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – The President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Ambassador Dennis Francis of Trinidad and Tobago, has arrived in Haiti on a two-day official visit.

This is the first official overseas visit for the Trinidad and Tobago diplomat who, on June 1 this year, was elected to the UNGA presidency and is presiding over the current 78th session of the UNGA. And he has already held talks with Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henry, who came to office following the July 7, 2021 assassination of then-President Jovenel Moise.

Ambassador Francis is also expected to meet with other stakeholders in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.

“Here in Port-au-Prince, I want to express my full solidarity with the Haitian people and convey the message that the international community has not forgotten them,” said Francis on his X account, formerly Twitter.

Francis has assured Prime Minister Henry of the support of member countries in his quest for the restoration of democratic institutions, stability, and the well-being of Haitians.
Prime Minister Henry has been calling on the international community to support the Kenya-led multi-national military force that the United Nations Security Council has approved to restore peace and stability.

Last week, the parliament in Kenya approved a motion to send 1,000 police officers to the troubled CARICOM country. In October, the 15-member United Nations Security Council also authorized the renewal for one year of the sanctions regime on Haiti, continuing a targeted arms embargo, travel ban, and asset freeze established in October last year to address the widespread violence, criminal activity, and human rights abuses plaguing the country.

It said elections are crucial for the sustainable rule of law.
