ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, Leader of the main opposition New National Party (NNP), Dr Keith Mitchell, has assured members of his constituency that they will be the first to know when he decides to leave the political arena.
Mitchell, who has represented the constituency of St George’s North West in the Lower House of Parliament since 1984, addressed a political meeting of the NNP on Thursday.
“When the time comes, I will inform you…Before I announce that I am no longer seeking the leadership of the New National Party, I will come to you first and tell you I intend to make that announcement,” Mitchell said.
“Through rain, thunder, and lightening you have always been there for me… despite the loss after the 1990 general election, the people of St George’s Northwest gave me 73% of support at that time, so how could anyone abandon such commitment at that time,” he said while announcing that the percentage of votes he received follow that election convinced him that he should not return to the United States.
“You made me what I am today,” he told the meeting.
This was the first of several meetings the Party will hold until the next general election, which is constitutionally due in 2027.
“Every Thursday and every Sunday, there will be a major activity of the party in a constituency; we are starting here, we are batting first …we are hearing there will be a snap election,” he said.
“We have to get moving and start serious work; we have to show people that we are ready to take back our country, and I will be there with you are leading that fight, sisters and brothers because we are afraid of no man,” he told his constituency. He did not say if he would lead the constituents as Leader of the NNP or the Party’s candidate for the upcoming general election.
The Party’s convention, which is overdue by two years, is set to take place before the end of this year.
