DOHA, Qatar, CMC – Jamaican international Michail Antonio will have an opportunity to revive his career as he is reportedly set to sign a short-term deal with Qatari Stars League club Al-Sailiya for the remainder of the season.
The 35-year-old Antonio has been trying to make a return to professional football following a 2024 car crash that left him with a broken leg, among other injuries.
He has since made a remarkable recovery from the accident and has been seeking a new club after his contract with English Premier League club West Ham United expired in June last year.
Since then, Antonio explored several options and trained with English Football League Championship club Leicester City. He was reportedly in talks with the club about a short-term deal, but it did not bear fruit.
However, Antonio is now poised to play professional football outside of England for the first time in his career.
The contract will be a short-term deal, as there are only six games left in the Qatari Stars League. Al-Sailiya currently sits 10th in the league table with a record of 4 wins, 3 draws, and 9 defeats this season.
Antonio is expected to join fellow Jamaican Mason Holgate, who is currently on loan from his parent club Al-Gharafa to Al-Sailiya, also in the Qatari league.
While he has not competed in a competitive club game since his accident, Antonio trained with the national team ahead of the Unity Cup last year. He was named in Steve McClaren’s squad for the Gold Cup, where he made cameo appearances in all three games for Jamaica.
