BRISBANE, Australia, CMC – Left-handed opener Usman Khawaja completed a second concussion test on Sunday to remain on course for the second Test against West Indies, bowling off at the Gabba here Thursday.

The 37-year-old, a veteran of 70 Tests, took a fearsome blow to the head from West Indies debutant quick Shamar Joseph on last Friday’s final day of the opening Test in Adelaide and was forced to retire hurt while spitting blood.

There were subsequent concerns Khawaja had suffered a fractured jaw or a concussion, but subsequent scans at the hospital revealed neither.

“Usman Khawaja continues to progress through protocols following a head impact in the first … Test match against the West Indies. He completed normal concussion assessments today,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“Khawaja will continue to be monitored for any delayed symptoms. He will be reviewed again tomorrow before returning to training before the second Test match in Brisbane.”

Joseph bowled with pace and accuracy in the Adelaide Test to finish with a five-wicket haul in the first innings. The 24-year-old is on his first-ever international tour after only making his first-class debut a year ago.

West Indies lost the opening Test by ten wickets.
