PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Princess Sarah Zeid of Jordan has ended a four-day visit to Haiti, expressing “deep indignation” at the fact that there are “so many forgotten women and children, whose voices are not heard and who do not receive the services and care they need”.
Zeid, who is also a Senior Special Advisor to the World Food Program (WFP), told a news conference that while she was leaving the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country “with mixed feelings of admiration,” she had also discovered a “magnificent country”.
Zeid, who met with Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime, told reporters that she saw the determination of the Haitian people to overcome their existing terrible conditions and that she would use her international influence to help Haiti.
“This is a collective responsibility… It is everyone’s responsibility to fight against the cruelty we are witnessing to guarantee the well-being of each of these populations.”
The Princess also visited La Paix University Hospital, the main and only major public referral hospital serving the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, meeting with the staff and touring the emergency and pediatric departments.
“There is a shortage of beds, but the staff has never faltered; they are always available to support the population in need.”
During this visit, the Princess was accompanied by representatives of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the World Food Program (WFP) in Haiti, the European Union delegation in Haiti, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator.
