CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Governor General, Sir Cyril E. M Charles, has been flown to the neighboring French island of Martinique for medical treatment, a statement from the Office of the Governor General confirmed Wednesday.

It gave no details of the illness but said that the 84-year-old head of state, who is accompanied by his wife, Lady Anicia, and his family, “respectfully requests the prayers and well wishes of the people of St. Lucia during this time.”

“The Office assures the public that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure continuity in the execution of the duties of the Office of the Governor General and the conduct of official business,” the statement said.

It noted that Felix Finisterre has since been appointed to deputize as Governor General “and to perform such functions of the Office as may be specified during this period”.

Charles, the son of the island’s first chief minister, George F.L. Charles, became the Governor General on November 1, 2024.
