PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Wednesday, the Trinidad and Tobago government said that its commitment to the regional integration movement CARICOM remains steadfast after announcing President Paula Mae Weekes’s proclaimed the Amendments to the Immigration (Caribbean Community Skilled Nationals) Act.

The amendments signal Trinidad and Tobago’s ongoing commitment to the deepening and strengthening of the regional integration process and bring Trinidad and Tobago into compliance with decisions of the Conference of Heads of Government regarding the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas and the Free Movement Regime,” said Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister, Dr. Amery Browne.

He said the proclamation brings into effect the expansion of the categories eligible for free movement within the region from five to 12 categories under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) intended to encourage the free movement of goods, skills, labor, and services across the CARICOM region.

These include university graduates, artists, musicians, media workers, sports, nongraduate nurses and teachers, artisans with a Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ), holders of Associate Degrees or a comparable qualification, and household domestics with a CVQ.

Agricultural workers, security guards, beauty service practitioners, and barbers will also be allowed free movement within the 15-member regional integration grouping.

“The additional categories increase employment opportunities within the region for Trinidad and Tobago nationals at home and those in the Diaspora abroad wishing to return to the region and is used as a mechanism to expand the range of skilled and unskilled labor available in the region for the socio-economic benefit of all Caribbean peoples,” Browne said.
