UPDATE JAMAICA-UWI, Mona Campus moves services online due to weather

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The University of the West Indies, Mona campus says in light of the weather conditions affecting Jamaica, the campus has decided to move all academic and administrative services online for Friday.

Based on this, the staff is working remotely, except the emergency management teams required to safeguard the campus.

The UWI Mona encourages its staff and students to be safe and take the necessary actions to protect lives and livelihoods.

The campus says further information will be provided as the day progresses.

And Northern Caribbean University (NCU) in the central parish of Manchester has also suspended face-to-face classes in light of severe weather conditions.

This comes after the Mayor of the parish capital, Mandeville, Donovan Mitchell, warned that flooding was likely to occur as several retention ponds in the capital were at capacity.

Mitchell also said that a retention pond near the Mandeville hospital is at capacity, and residents should anticipate flooding in the capital.

Meanwhile – A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Jamaica, Haiti, the Cuban provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguin, Granma, Las Tunas, the Southeastern Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

On the forecast track, the system is expected to move across Jamaica later on Friday, southeastern Cuba by early Saturday, and the southeastern Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands later on Saturday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts.

Some slight strengthening is possible during the next couple of days, but the system’s chance of becoming a tropical cyclone appears to be decreasing.
