UPDATE CAYMAN ISLANDS–Judge stops assault trial former Premier discharged

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands, CMC – The judge presiding over the case against former Premier William McKeeva Bush on Thursday stayed the proceedings due to a successful application by the defense, accusing the crown of an abuse of process.

Based on this, Justice Stanley John discharged the jury, released Bush from his bail conditions, and stopped the trial.

The crown noted that Bush was not discharged as a result of the evidence but because of the process and that it was open to the prosecution to appeal the judge’s ruling, and if successful, Bush could take the stand once again.

Bush was charged last year in the wake of allegations that he indecently assaulted two civil servants at a cocktail party at the Ritz hotel in September 2022 during a Caribbean Tourism Organisation conference hosted by the tourism ministry.

Bush was accused of kissing one woman on the shoulder twice and biting and sucking another woman’s hand while attending the event. He denied the allegations.
