KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC — Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett has expressed sorrow at the passing of United States Representative Sheila Jackson Lee.
Congresswoman Jackson Lee, who served the 18th Congressional District of Texas since 1995, died at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer.
In a statement on Saturday following her passing, Bartlett lauded her remarkable friendship and unwavering support for Jamaica.
“Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was not just a distinguished leader in the United States, but she was also a true friend to Jamaica. Her strong and unwavering support for our nation has been deeply valued, and her contributions have left an indelible mark on our people and our country,” Bartlett said.
“Her advocacy for civil rights, racial justice, and human rights, particularly for women and children, has been exemplary. She fought courageously on local, national, and international fronts, making significant strides in pursuing justice and equality. Her efforts in passing key legislation, such as the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act and the George Floyd Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act, have fortified her legacy as a champion of civil rights.”
Bartlett said Jackson Lee’s passing is a tremendous loss to the people of Texas and the United States, as well as those worldwide who were inspired by her tireless work and dedication.
“Her sterling contributions to the United States and her heartfelt connection with Jamaica will be remembered with deep gratitude and respect. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” he said.
“As we mourn her passing, we celebrate the life of a remarkable woman whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations,” Bartlett added.
