TRINIDAD-Trinidad records second case of Mpox

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC- The Ministry of Health says a second case of the Mpox virus was confirmed via laboratory testing on Wednesday.

The patient has been identified as a young adult male, but it’s unknown if the patient had a travel history like the first case reported on Tuesday.

Based on this, the County Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) is conducting an epidemiological investigation and has initiated the local public health response, which includes home isolation and contact tracing for the patient.

The Ministry said it will continue to provide updates to the public as necessary. Meanwhile, in Grenada, the Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Religious Affairs says it is aware of and closely monitors pox cases in Trinidad and Tobago.

The pox is a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae.

It can be transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal or contaminated material such as bedding.

It is also transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, and respiratory droplets.

The main symptoms of pox are fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.
