PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Police say one man is assisting their investigations into allegations that he used social media to make death threats to citizens.
In a statement, the police said that based on extensive inquiries they conducted regarding reported death threats made via social media against persons in the Arima Police District, east of here, they went to a residence in San Fernando, south of here.
“Upon arrival at the location, officers interacted with a male suspect and questioned him regarding the ongoing investigation. The suspect was detained and taken to the Arima Police Station for further inquiries,” the brief police statement said.
Under the Offences Against the Person Act, a person guilty of an offense is liable, on summary conviction, to a fine of TT$2,000 (One TT dollar = 0.16 cents) and six months imprisonment.
The Act also allows for a person accused of conduct that would constitute an offense, which causes the other person to fear that violence will be used against him. The person whose course of conduct is in question knows or ought to know that his conduct will cause the other person to fear, commits an offense, and is liable on conviction on indictment to a fine of TT$10,000 and imprisonment for five years or on summary conviction, to a fine of TT$5,000 and imprisonment for six months.
