PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – A 36-year-old corporal with the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) has been charged with manslaughter after his 15-year-old daughter died after being disciplined at their home on April 5, this year.

A police statement said that David Alexander is due to appear in a Couva Magistrate Court, in central Trinidad, in connection with the death of his daughter, Alliyah Alexander, who was buried last weekend.

The statement said that the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Joan Honore-Paul, on Monday gave instructions to charge the soldier with the death of Alliyah, who was at her father’s Claxton Bay home “where she was allegedly being disciplined.

“Following the incident, she was found unresponsive and was taken to the Couva District Health Facility where she was pronounced dead,” the police statement said.

Media reports said that the Form Four secondary school student was beaten with a belt and fell down a flight of stairs.

An autopsy on Alexander found that she died from blunt force injuries.
